receiving garbage instead of numbers

I have setup usb barcode scanner using winusb and nrusb but instead of barcode number I receive weird strings like
][\a]]"'!% ''&"'"'!% ''&"'"'!% ''&"'"'!% ''&"'"'!% ''&"'"'!% ''&"'("'!%

any idea why?
